Can same sex couples legally adopt together in California?
Yes, in California the law is clear.  A same sex couple can legally adopt a baby together when the baby is born domestically (within the United States).  In some states the law is not as clear-cut and we work to make sure that families adopting a child out of state are abiding by all state rules and regulations.  Adoption Connection is only licensed to work with adoptive families in 19 Northern California counties.  Please check the areas we serve.

Do birthmothers really choose to place their babies with same-sex adoptive families? Absolutely.  There are many different reasons why a birthmother may want, or prefer, a same-sex couple.

Do LGBT families have a more difficult time finding the right birthmother to work with? Finding the right adoption situation can be challenging for everyone!  LGBT families fare very well in the domestic adoption process.  They do tend to wait longer to find the right match, but not substantially. In 2007 same-sex families waited an average of two to three months longer then our heterosexual adoptive parents (about 15 months).

Is the adoption process any different for LGBT families?  Adoption Connection considers the domestic adoption process for same-sex families to be almost identical.  We will be asking these families a few different questions during their homestudy process so that they can prepare for their unique adoption journey.

Do some birthmothers request ONLY a heterosexual family?
Yes, some certainly do and we will honor any preferences that she may have.

Do you offer services specifically to LGBT families?  All of our services, workshops and trainings are appropriate for everyone in our adoption programs.  We do offer LGBT adoptive parenting workshops (they are not mandatory) and we are always open to suggestion for future resources and trainings that we can offer for pre- and post- adoptive parents.
